Training Components

One of the main teaching objectives of this project is to train students in the taxonomy of each of the currently recognized orders of tapeworms. This will be done through a series of taxonomic workshops, focusing on one or more of the tapeworm orders, each taught by one of the world's leading experts on the taxonomy of the focus tapeworm group. In addition, through working on the taxonomy of the three target cestode groups, students will gain first hand, practical experience with these three groups. Students will obtain field experience through participation in three collecting expeditions. Students will take formalized course-work in GIS, electron microscopy, nomenclature and systematics. Their training will be further broadened through additional workshops focusing on light microscopy, cestode development, and computer methods of phylogenetic analysis.
