Monographic Components

The main research objectives of this project are to monograph the Diphyllidea, Lecanicephalidea, and Tetraphyllidea; three orders of tapeworms that parasitize the sharks, skates, and rays (elasmobranchs) of the world. This will be done through examination of the existing literature as well as all of the available type and voucher material of all of the species in each of these tapeworm orders. In addition, fresh material will be collected from elasmobranch species that have not previously been examined for parasites, or that represent type hosts for some of the more poorly known tapeworm species. The monographs will deal with all species in each group, their synonyms, descriptions, phylogenetic relationships, biogeography and host associations. In addition, all relevant data, images, literature, etc. will be captured and made available through a user-friendly database.
