Welcome To Nicrophorus Central!

This site is intended to be a resource to all those interested in species of the subfamily Nicrophorinae (Insecta: Coleoptera: Silphidae). Many of the resources planned for this site are still under development as part of a systematic revision of the Nicrophorinae by Stephen Trumbo, Stewart Peck, and Derek Sikes (expected completion date: late 2001).

One aspect of this site it to provide a communications center for researchers who work with nicrophorines. Thus numerous aspects of this site are dependent upon your input, such as the directory of Nicrophorus workers, the bulletin board, the photo gallery, and the literature database.

We hope that Nicrophorus researchers around the globe will continually add to this site, thereby increasing its value to all.

-Stephen T. Trumbo & Derek S. Sikes, Feb 1999.

What's new and in progress: (15 May 2003)

  • 15 May 2003: added images to worker directory (if your entry lacks an image just email it to me!) and link to World Catalog of the Nicrophorinae. This catalog was published in the journal Zootaxa as vol. 65. It includes a bibliography of over 1000 references.
  • 22 may 2000: added a gallery to all the Hatch aberrational names of Nicrophorus (in the photo gallery). Added over 100 pdf files of scanned original literature, primarily original descriptions of Nicrophorinae names. To find these search the literature database and select 'complete text'.
  • 8 May 2000: added more references to the literature db, now over 900. Also added the start of a gallery to display images of my expedition to Nepal.
  • 30 January 2000: Added a Guest Book so visitors can leave comments.
  • 27 January 2000: Added the literature database. This database currently has 888 references, many of them annotated, over 190 references with complete abstracts, and so far we have posted complete English translations of 2 important works (more to come). Anyone in the directory can use their password to add references to the database on-line. In this fashion we hope to keep this database constantly growing and up-to-date (no reference is too obscure --if it includes data on nicrophorines; however, please don't add 'submitted' or 'in-press' papers unless you are diligent about updating them once they are published.)
  • 18 May 1999: Broke the bordering image to create a frame with navigation links and made various minor improvements- fixed problem with photogallery database.
  • 9 April 1999: Added a links page- if you know of any links we've missed please tell us!
  • 6 April 1999: Added a site map to make navigation easier.
  • We've finished posting an English translation of Erna Pukowski's very influential 1933 paper. Eventually this will be housed within the literature database, but until that is complete you can access it here.
  • We haven't yet finished the literature database and material examined databases. These will be linked through the catalog and other databases so that one can access the specimens examined for any species in the catalog listing, or find all the publications of a worker listed in the Worker Directory.
  • Well, the whole site is new! There may be a few bugs to work out still, so if you find any, please tell us.
