I studied the effect of habitat fragmentation on three species in a matrix of farmland and forest habitat in Switzerland. Capture/re-capture techniques and bait-burying containers were used. Both abundance and species occurrence were affected by the degree of isolation and the size of habitat fragments. This result was not likely caused by interspecific competition but rather by reduced dispersal of individuals.
