We are preparing a queriable database of the species in the University of Connecticut Insect collections. Our collections focus on the fauna of Southern New England. All insect orders are represented in the collection. Its holdings are particularly strong in the Heteroptera (especially Lygaeidae and Corixidae), Coleoptera (especially Cicindelinae and other Carabidae, and Scarabeidae) and Lepidoptera (especially Noctuidae and microlepidoptera). Our collection is of regional significance as an identification resource, voucher repository, and source of research specimens. It is the second largest collection in Connecticut and among the most active in New England. Significant additions have resulted from the acquisition of several orphaned collections (e.g. Bruce Museum, Norwalk, CT). The collections are of historical significance, with numerous 100+ year old specimens from areas now urbanized. Faculty and staff have added significant holdings through general collecting and research. Particularly important are the ectoparasites and disease transmitters from the late Lawrence Penner (parasitologist with extensive training in entomology). The most recent collections are Neotropical, with material from Ecuador (Collections Manager, Dr. Jane O`Donnell) and Costa Rica (O`Donnell and David Wagner). |
