TIGER BEETLES OF CONNECTICUT

Acknowledgments

This research was funded by a H. Allen Mali Research Fund grant from the Connecticut Chapter of The Nature Conservancy awarded to Derek S. Sikes on 8 April 1996.

Many people contributed to the completion of this project. First and foremost I must blame and thank Dr. David Wagner. I blame him for getting me interested in this project which has been a large distraction from my dissertation research. However, I thank him for getting me interested in this project which has been a large distraction from my dissertation research. All the photographs were taken and paid for by Piotr Naskrecki © 1996. Piotr also provided his expertise and critical advice with databasing, taxonomy and field work. Two database programs were used for this project: Orthoptera DB: The Taxonomy and Collection Manager created by Piotr Naskrecki © 1996, and Biota: The Biodiversity and Database Manager created by Dr. Robert Colwell © 1996 and published by Sinauer Press. Dr. Jane O'Donell provided assistance with permits and collection management issues. My advisor, Dr. Carl Schaefer, contributed his support and editorial expertise throughout the project. My previous advisor,Dr. Michael Ivie, who taught me the Coleoptera, must receive a significant acknowledgement, for without his training I would not have been qualified to undertake this project. Dr. C. Barry Knisley verified my determinations of larvae and contributed his data. Dr. Thomas D. Schultz, who had begun this project in the late 1980s but had to leave CT and did not finish, provided me with excellent site data for many of the rare species. The efforts of Robert Muller and Dave Norris added valuable records to the database. Sacha Spector graciously allowed me the use of his totally excellent color monitor and Power Center TM 132 computer.

I am very grateful to the collection managers and curators who supported my databasing efforts: Dr. Lee Herman [AMNH], Dr. Phil Perkins [MCZC], Dr. Ray Pupedis [PMNH], Drs. Ken Welch & Chris Maier [CAES], Douglas Comboni [DJCC], Dr. Jane O'Donell [UCMS], Dr. Thomas Shultz [TDSC], Dr. David Wagner [DLWC], Dr. Michael Valenti [MAVC], Philip Parrillo [FMNH], and the collection manager of the University of Michigan Museum of Zoology [UMMZ].

And lastly but certainly not leastly, I owe an enormous debt to my wife, Melissa Sikes, who not only tolerated my long and frequent absences but supported this research in numerous ways (including the addition of data).
