About Registration

Registration of the names of cultivars is to promote the nomenclatural stability of cultivars in Nymphaeaceae Salisb. through the production of a checklist and ultimately published Register. It also ensures that no-one else can use the same name within a particular genus or denomination class. The clear advantage of having an on-line checklist is to enable users to comment on, reference and amend records. A hybridizer wishing to name and register a new cultivar can download and submit the registration form. Any questions about the form can be directed to the Registrar. Detailed notes for Hybridizers, Registrants and Nominants can be found at http//www.ishs.org/icra/index.htm.

The naming of new cultivars within the Nymphaeaceae Salisb. (1988) is governed by The International Code of Nomenclature for Cultivated Plants (ICNCP) 1995. The ICNCP or 'Cultivated Code' covers a number of articles and recommendations to be adhered to when naming a new cultivar. In addition, the Cultivated Code has detailed and useful appendices covering, terminology, nomenclatural filters, quick guides, lists of International Cultivar Registration Authorities and lists of existing checklists.
