Welcome to the Periodical Cicada Database This database contains records for Magicicada specimens from various entomological collections. Many of the specimens in this database are from the frozen collections of Chris Simon and collaborators (1974 to present) housed at the University of Connecticut. We thank the curators of the collections included for their assistance and cooperation. The creation of this database was supported by NSF grant DEB 98-12779, "Collection of Co-emergence of 13- and 17-year periodical cicadas (SGER)," a Biodiversity/Bioinformatics REU supplement to DEB 98-07113, "The Evolution of 13- and 17-year periodical cicadas" and NSF DEB 99-2039, "Allochronic speciation, reproductive character displacement, and sexual selection in periodical cicadas" along with REU supplements. Collection of specimens in the Simon collection (1974-present) was sponsored by various grants from the National Science Foundation, the University of Connecticut, the University of Hawaii, the Theodore Roosevelt Memorial Fund, and Sigma Xi. Some materials are also courtesy of the University of Michigan Museum of Zoology. The database can be searched by brood number, date, year, location, and/or species. Individuals wishing more detailed information for scientific purposes can contact Chris Simon. These data may not be published without written permission from Chris Simon. |
